EAST WARD BY-ELECTION STRONG SHOWING IN DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES IN PETERBOROUGH EAST
10% VOTE FOR UKIP
Graham Whitehead, Branch Chairman Published June 11th 2017
I stood for UKIP in the East Ward Council By-election on the same day as the General Election.
Despite our poor showing nationally and intensive campaigning by the “major” parties using their General Election resources I polled 10% of the vote and beat the Liberal Democrats to take third place. Because it took place on General Election day, Labour & Conservatives had the upper hand and I had a hard fight to explain that this was about local not national issues.
Nevertheless, 10% is a good result as we were polling about 2% nationally and to beat the LibDem who is a St. Michael's Gate resident is significant, due to the controversial evictions that took place last year.
The Labour candidate won. There were some unsavoury elements to the campaign and the Police were investigating fraud allegations but seem to have turned a blind eye again.
The result puts the Tories two short of a majority on the Council and shows that UKIP are still relevant in Peterborough and very much a force to be reckoned with.
BY-ELECTION NEWS EYE, THORNEY & NEWBOROUGH
POLL TO BE HELD ON SEPT 7th Graham Whitehead, Branch Chairman Published July 29th 2017
A by-election to fill the vacant Peterborough City Council seat in Eye, Thorney and Newborough ward will be held on Thursday 7 September 2017.
The seat has been vacant since the resignation of David Sanders in May and an official notice of election will be published on Wednesday 2 August.
At the all-out election last year, we were only 57 votes away from taking one of the three seats available, so we have every reason to go into this by-election feeling that we can win. We’ve already chosen our candidate for the election and will soon be making an announcement on here and in the local press.
